1984 book cover

1984 is an incredible book, and I found myself inspired by many possible directions for the design. For this cover, I chose to focus on the rigid, controlled lifestyles depicted in the story and translate that sense of structure and restriction into the visual design.
I designed the back cover to highlight the only joyful part of the story—Orwell’s meetings with Julia. The “2+2=5” motif represents one of the book’s most powerful statements about brainwashing, showing how logic and reasoning are stripped away under authoritarian control.

I chose a black-and-white color scheme to reflect the bleak and oppressive tone of the book. The front cover is designed to convey how Orwell’s character feels trapped in his own mind and life, constantly being watched. While keeping the title as the focal point, I incorporated an abstract illustration with heavy shading to capture the dark, intense character of the story.
